BACKGROUND
The development of Hospital Al-Sultan Abdullah started in 1995 when the Malaysian Minister of Education proposed the establishment of Faculty of Medicine if the Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM) wanted to be upgraded to a university. The establishment of this Faculty of Medicine was important to increase the number of bumiputera doctors in Malaysia. In 2002, after becoming a university known as Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), the Ministry of Education Malaysia approved the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine. However, it was only in 2003 that the Faculty of Medicine began operating at the UiTM Jalan Othman Campus, Petaling Jaya with a total of 20 students.
In an effort to provide clinical training to students of the Faculty of Medicine, UiTM has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Ministry of Health Malaysia to place these medical students in government hospitals and polyclinics. Two hospitals have been proposed to accommodate these medical students to undergo their training, namely Hospital Selayang and Hospital Sungai Buloh. On 17th July 2006, the Ministry of Higher Education instructed UiTM that the development of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry be maintained in Sungai Buloh and implemented immediately.
Accordingly, the construction project of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry has proceeded as scheduled in the area near Sungai Buloh Hospital. In order to accommodate the growing number of medical students, UiTM has applied to the government to build its own teaching hospital and do not have to depend on Sungai Buloh Hospital and Selayang Hospital. In 2008, the Mesyuarat Jemaah Menteri (MJM) agreed in principle to build a Teaching Hospital at UiTM Selangor Branch Puncak Alam Campus.
