Welcome to the Infection Prevention and Control Unit Hospital Al Sultan Abdullah

At Hospital Al Sultan Abdullah, the health and safety of our patients, staff, and visitors are our top priorities.

Headed by Prof Madya Dr Syahrul Azlin Shaari, the unit comprises of team of experienced and dedicated professionals, including a medical officer and infection control nurses, all devoted to enhancing the practice of infection prevention and control.

The Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Unit plays a vital role in maintaining a safe clinical environment by implementing evidence-based practices to prevent and manage healthcare-associated infections (HAls).

Our dedicated IPC team works collaboratively across all departments to monitor infection trends, enforce rigorous hygiene protocols, provide staff education, and ensure compliance with national and international standards. We are committed to fostering a culture of safety through proactive surveillance, rapid response to infection risks, and continuous improvement of infection control strategies.

Whether you're a patient, healthcare worker, or visitor, our goal is to protect your wellbeing and support the hospital's mission of delivering high-quality, safe, and compassionate care.The department provides services at two main centres, Hospital Al-Sultan Abdullah UiTM in Puncak Alam and UITM Medical Centre in Sungai Buloh.

  • To be well informed with development in healthcare infection prevention and control and recommend on best practices

The provision of services of the Infection Prevention and Control Unit include:

  1. Provide clinical advice and consultation to healthcare workers on infection control issues.
  2. Provide guidance and support to the infection control link nurses.
  3. Monitors the infection prevention and control practices are being implemented in accordance to standard guidelines.
  4. Coordinate surveillance activities related to hospital infection prevention and control for the hospital.
  5. Recognize, investigate and implement immediate control measures during outbreaks.
  6. Provide advice regarding the purchase of related medical devices and equipment, building/renovation and engineering services related to infection prevention and control e.g., environmental cleaning, waste disposal.
  7. Revise the Infection control manual so that it complies with current national guidelines and professional standards.
  8. Advocate antimicrobial stewardship via AMS programme.
  9. Collecting and analyzing data on MDRO (Multidrug-Resistant Organisms), which includes:
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
  • Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL) producing Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • ESBL producing Escherichia coli
  • Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE)
  • Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE)
  • Acinetobacter baumannii
  1. Coordinating infection prevention and control monitoring at an optimal level in the department wards such as:
  • Surgery
  • Medicine
  • Orthopedics
  • Pediatrics
  • Critical care wards & others
  1.    Providing training related to infection prevention and control such as:
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Healthcare Environmental Hygiene (HEH) Workshop
  • Orientation program for new staff
  • Infection Control Link Nurse Workshop
  • Catheter Bundle Training (Phlebotomy, CVL, IV Theraphy workshop)
  • Hand Hygiene Workshop
