Geriatrics Unit

Geriatrics or Geriatric Medicine is a medical subspeciality under the Department of Medicine which specialises in the care of the older persons.

Geriatric Medicine emphasizes on the individualised, holistic care of older persons above the age of 60. Due to the significant variability of each individual older adult in terms of their intrinsic factors such as physical ability, cognitive and psychological function, disease burden, as well as other external factors like family dynamics and socioeconomic status, the complex interplay of these factors should be taken into consideration when managing any Geriatric patient.

Each patient referred to our unit will undergo a process called the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment. This purpose of this process is to evaluate all the significant intrinsic and extrinsic factors which affects the patients' well-being and formulate a management plan which aims to improve the patients' quality of life. This typically includes assessments by the Geriatric specialists as well as physiotherapists and occupational therapists, but may include reviews by the dietitians, psychologists and the medical social workers.

Geriatrics Unit UiTM currently comprises of 2 Geriatricians, 1 Geriatric Fellow and 1 staff nurse. Though small in numbers, we are dedicated to providing our services in both the inpatient and outpatient setting; as well as disseminating knowledge and raising awareness to the general public via seminars and events such as the annual International Day of Older Persons celebration.
