About Us
The UiTM Basic Life Support (BLS) Course was first introduced at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in year 2010. The early team was formed by faculty lecturers from Emergency Medicine and Anaesthesiology assisted by paramedics from Hospital Selayang. Over the years, with the increase number in staff at the faculty and hospital, the team are now made up of emergency physicians, medical officers, nurses and paramedics from various departments.
The team provides BLS certification to undergraduate and postgraduate students, hospital personnel and private organizations. The curriculum is designed following recommendations and guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Ministry of Health Malaysia. The course has also received accreditation from the Malaysian Resuscitation Association (MyRES). Our instructors have extensive experience in managing cardiac arrest cases. In order to uphold the utmost level of training quality, every instructor must participate in a trainers’ course led by emergency physicians. In addition to training, the team also engage in studies related to cardiac arrest, CPR education, and CPR technologies, ensuring ongoing relevance and evidence-based information for participants.
Traditionally, this course has been a one-day program involving classroom teaching, live demonstrations, and assessments. However, the recent pandemic has exposed limitations in the conventional BLS education system, prompting the adoption of innovative teaching methods. Beginning year 2021, we have introduced a blended learning approach where participants have access to instructional videos online before the course starts, self-practice at the skills lab and a session with the instructor on the day of the course. The BLS online platform allows broader accessibility to our educational resources, offer efficient course management to participants and in over the long term, extends CPR training to individuals without professional medical backgrounds.
In addition to the BLS training and certification initiatives, the UiTM CPR Squad organizes outreach activities for the general public and warga UiTM, raising awareness about cardiac arrest and emphasizing the importance of AEDs. This is in perfect harmony with our tagline "Creating a University of Heartsavers" emphasizing the aspiration to cultivate a community well-versed in essential life-saving abilities.
